First, in case your not sure what a Captcha is Wikipedia has a great explanation here.

“Captcha is a type of challenge-response test used in computing to ensure that the response is not generated by a computer. The process usually involves one computer (a server) asking a user to complete a simple test which the computer is able to generate and grade. Because other computers are unable to solve the CAPTCHA, any user entering a correct solution is presumed to be human.”

Many content management systems have the ability to add a captcha to submissions fields so you can cut down on spam. However, there are times when you may need your own custom captcha. Programmers looking to create their own content management systems or forms.

There is a great tutorial found via McKremie on their blog so you can learn how to make your own captcha. Their guide discusses how you can use PHP and GD to create your own fairly simply. They provide you with the code to help set up your own.
